A US producer has partnered with a Malaysian 2D animation specialist to develop a series based on the adventures of a sarcastic superhero cat.

Nine Lives of Claw will be a coproduction between Kuala Lumpur-based Animasia Studios and US firm Pilla-Scheetz Productions.

Jay Lender, a writer on shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants, is on board as a writer, director and producer.

The two companies are also developing mobile games and a toy line based on the property, which follows a feline superhero and his genius but highly strung mouse sidekick as they battle villains.

The producers plan to showcase a pilot episode of the show at MipJunior in Cannes later this year.

Animasia is behind series such as Chuck Chicken, ABC Monsters and Harry & Bunnie, while Pilla-Scheetz was established in 1991 by Greg Scheetz and Gary Pilla.
